Add links and shortcuts to homepages and content using the Menu Applet. The buttons create easy navigation, link to internal and external content, and respect the permissions of your internal content. In this guide, you'll learn how to add and link up a menu button.
Before you start:
-
You'll need be assigned the Homepage Manager for the area you'll be adding the applet
Adding the Menu Applet
-
Navigate to the page options in the top-right of the homepage and select Edit this homepage
-
Click the pencil toolbox and find the applet. Drag and drop it onto the homepage where a blue line appears
- To configure the applet, hover over it and click the three dots in the top-right
-
Provide the applet with a new title and choose an icon from the catalogue. To hide the title, toggle off show title. The title will be visible when optimising the homepage for mobile - it's important to give it a unique name so it's easy to find.
-
Configure the appearance of the applet using the toggles, including if you would like to display a background or add padding.
-
Choose the orientation of the buttons from the drop-down; dynamic, vertical or horizontal. Oak will automatically optimise the display for the available space, depending on where you add the applet on the homepage.
Top tip: If several buttons are added to a horizontal display, the menu will wrap over multiple lines. In this case, we recommend having an even number of buttons so that they stack symmetrically.
-
Toggle on/off wrap text.
-
Change the appearance of the buttons, including the roundness and button colour. If you need to branch out of the primary and secondary brand colours, pick a custom colour.
-
Edit the font settings; the text size, font weight and alignment. Click through the drop-down menus to choose the preferred options.
-
Configure the Layout, choosing between standard or compact. The menu will automatically update to preview the change.
- Choose a Source from the drop-down:
Manual
Select this if you'd like to continue with custom buttons.
My Tools
Select this if you'd like to display personalised Tools on the homepage. They can be customised by employees to display their most frequently visited areas/links. The more someone selects a Tool, the higher up it will appear in the list. If Tools is selected, remember to choose the number of items you'd like to display per page and the tab colour.
If nothing is showing, you'll need to set up your Tools - for more information, check out our handy guide on creating Toolkits.
-
To finish setting up the custom buttons, type in the labels for each button.
-
Choose an optional icon from the catalogue by clicking the image icon.
-
The important part is linking up your buttons; select the link icon to open the object picker and link to somewhere in your intranet. If you're linking to somewhere within the intranet, the content/area will automatically become the button label to save you time.
-
To add an external link, go to Custom link and paste the URL.
-
To add more buttons, click Add a button.
-
Re-order the buttons by holding down on the arrows and dragging and dropping.
-
Select the trash can icon to the right of the button to delete it.
-
Close the applet to save the changes and publish the homepage.
