Smart Layout is a modern and more intelligent way to bring content to life in Oak through the Content Applet. As your feed grows, the layout dynamically reorganises itself on the homepage, combining different layouts to keep your content fresh and interactive.
The layout can be used for sharing news, a blend of content on a main homepage, or in a News Centre to reduce the number of applets needed.

Recap on Oak's Smart Features
Oak's Smart Features work together to super-power the way you deliver content. Use them individually or combine them to take your content to the next level.
We have the 3 Smarts:
-
Smart Layout - this is an additional layout within the Content Applet.
-
Smart Area - allows the promotion of content, via Smart Delivery, to operate within a selected Area instead of across the entire intranet. Think of it as being able to pin content within an area to the top of the Smart Layout feed.
- Smart Delivery - Smart Delivery itself has not changed, but it now powers Smart Area. When using Smart Delivery on it's own, it creates a personalised news feed for each user, curating news content that has been targeted to them and ordering based on priority, promotion, engagement, and recency.
Setting up Smart Layout (and Smart Area)
-
Navigate to the page options (three dots) in the top-right corner of the homepage and select Edit this homepage.
-
Open the pencil toolbox and find the Content Applet. Drag and drop the applet onto the homepage where a blue line appears. For the best visual experience, try adding the Content Applet to a wider homepage column.
-
Smart Layout is a Content Applet layout. Hovering over the Content Applet, select the three dots in the top-right corner to configure.
-
Firstly, go to Styling tab in the middle and select Smart from the layouts. Choosing this first will remove any options that are not applicable to the set-up.
-
Click back to the Content tab. Here you can add your title and choose an icon from the catalogue. To remove the applet title, toggle it off. It's important that the applet has a meaningful title even if the title has been hidden; having titles makes optimising for mobile easy.
-
Choose the applet Source from the drop-down. By default, it will be set to Area, displaying content that has been published to the homepage's area.
-
To show area content and promoted content together, select Smart Area. Content can be pulled from multiple source areas, however only promoted content from within the homepage's area will show. Next to Source Areas, click Change to open the object picker and select the areas from within your intranet.
Note: Smart Area uses the promotion only stream. News can be promoted to specific audiences on the content publication page.
-
Choose the default display order from the drop-down.
-
Back to the Styling tab, decide if you would like to invert the paging text colour. This is useful for ensuring the paging options stand out on darker backgrounds. The other styling options are not applicable here and will be greyed out.
-
Click into the final tab, Advanced.
-
Change how you'd like to view the content - Paged, Single page, and Expandable. For paged or single page, select the amount of content items to show per page.
-
Select/deselect the content types to display in the Smart Layout. Use the Select all/Deselect all options to speed things up.
-
Click Close to save the applet changes and publish your homepage.
